Data Sprint workshop – new technologies – “Sharing Worlds”
The first week of July offered the opportunity for young Quilombolas from Oriximináin Pará state, to learn to use data and statistics to improve community life. They participated in a data sprint workshop promoted by ECAM in partnership with the Brazilian Institute for Research and Data Analysis (IBPAD), with support from USAID within the Sustainable Territories Program and New Technologies Program. Quilombola youth learned to use statistical surveys to identify community problems and to build life plans, long-term territory management plans.
The workshop marked a new phase in the New Technologies and Traditional Communities program called “Sharing Worlds.” In this new phase, data collected by communities is analyzed and deployed to help them share their realities with the broader world and collaborate in identifying solutions to the challenges raised. The objective was to offer technological tools so communities’ youth may systematize and structure their needs, such as basic sanitation, drinking water, education, health services, among others.
The data sprint yields data quickly and objectively, providing a basis to look for solutions or directions. In turn the data will be studied through mathematical and statistical modeling. Youth will be able to structure their communities life plans and design projects to present to the government, private companies and other institutions interested in partnering to solve the problems raised.
