‘Paricá’: New Program to Drive Socioenvironmental Impact in the Amazon

December, 2024 – The new year will kick off with a major announcement for five municipalities in Pará: in the first half of January, the selected proponents of the Paricá – Territories in Action Program will be revealed.

In its first edition, the program is designed to support initiatives focused on social inclusion and sustainable development in the municipalities of Abel Figueiredo, São João do Araguaia, Bom Jesus do Tocantins, Rondon do Pará, and Dom Eliseu.

The Paricá program aims to foster sustainable development in the Amazon by promoting projects that prioritize biodiversity conservation, poverty reduction, and diversity and equity. It focuses on agroecology, sustainable resource management, income generation, skills training, handicrafts, and ecotourism. The initiative is a partnership between Partnership Platform for the Amazon (PPA) and Suzano, supported by USAID and Alliance of Bioversity & CIAT.

In December, selected projects from the first phase will be notified. Starting in February, financial investments will begin, accompanied by strategic support and ongoing guidance. 

Targeting associations, cooperatives, and families in vulnerable situations, the program seeks to enhance the region through training, agroecology practices, and the implementation of Agroforestry Systems. 

“This partnership between PPA and Suzano is incredibly important for us at USAID. It represents an investment by major companies that act as impactful players and recognize their role in supporting the sustainable development of the Amazon region. This is essential,” said Catherine Hamlin, Environment Office Director in USAID Brazil.

The program focuses on initiatives aligned with one of three thematic pillars: environmental conservation and ecosystem restoration; participatory territorial governance; and sustainable economic development, social inclusion, and poverty reduction.

“We cannot advocate for the recovery and preservation of the forest without addressing and prioritizing the development of the communities that live here. As a society, it’s our duty to bring together diverse actors to collectively work toward the well being of the Amazon,” said Giordano Automare, Executive Manager of Social Development at Suzano.
