USAID Brazil: Partnerships Strengthening Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Growth
July, 2024 – The Amazon, due to its global importance, is a priority in the relationship between the United States and Brazil, whose diplomatic relations celebrate 200 years in 2024. USAID works closely with the Brazilian government, the private sector, and civil society partners to protect Amazonian biodiversity and promote sustainable economic growth.
To highlight USAID's significant work and achievements in Brazil during 2023, the Agency released its “Annual Report,” showcasing partnerships and engagement with local communities, Indigenous Peoples, women, and others with whom we strive to amplify their voices.
In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), USAID has enhanced the Brazilian government's capacity to control and prevent forest fires through an integrated approach to fire management and the restoration of fire-prone degraded areas.
Together with the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), we launched a new project: Regenerative Agriculture for Conservation of the Amazon (ARCA). This initiative aims to develop solutions for biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation by providing training in agroforestry systems and restoration.
Additionally, with our private sector partners, we supported 15 projects under the Partnership Platform for the Amazon (PPA). Another priority for USAID is gender equality, which is why we encourage our partners to invest in training initiatives that enable women to play active roles in community decision-making.
