Seminar brings together national and international experts to discuss impact investment

SITAWI held its second State of the Art "Finance for Good” event on June 12 in São Paulo. Over 280 guests took part in the event, which included lectures, plenary sessions, networking opportunities and an area for participants to display their products.

The seminar was supported by the Partnership Platform for the Amazon (PPA), an initiative under the PCAB, the Climate and Society Institute (iCS) and the Humanize Institute. There were ten sessions with topics such as Social Impact Contracts, Green Bonds, Socio-Environmental Risk, Innovative Financial Mechanisms, Philanthropic Funds, ASG Integration, Climate Change and Investment.

The panel discussion entitled "Investing in the Amazon: one size does not fit all" addressed the importance and need for viable and sustainable economic alternatives aligned with conservation  more productive economic practices , and capable of sustaining the local population at a higher income level and with less environmental impact. The panel included Mariano Cenamo from IDESAM, one of the executive coordinators for the private-sector led PPA; Joanna Martins, CEO of Manioca, a company that is participating in PPA's Acceleration Program; Georgia Pessoa, CEO of the Humanize Institute; and Nick Oakes, Investment Director at Althelia Funds.

For Joanna Martins, the seminar provided a valuable opportunity to approach different audiences, such as impact investors, and share some of the issues affecting production in the Amazon: “Sometimes, the Amazon feels too remote for many people. So it is great to have a chance to showcase the initiatives taking place in the region, and demonstrate that it is possible to promote development without destruction, offering quality of life and valuing the people of the region while preserving the environment," she added.

During the panel, the 2nd PPA Call for Proposals  was launched, seeking to support impact businesses and entrepreneurs in the Amazon. Learn more about the call here.
