U.S. government announces US $950,000 in assistance to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in Brazil

Brasilia, May 1, 2020:   The United States is providing US $950,000 (approximately R$ 5.21 million) in new economic support funds to incentivize private sector investments in mitigating non-health COVID-19 impacts on rural and vulnerable urban populations in Brazil with a focus on the Amazon region. This assistance builds upon past U.S. investment in Brazil, which totals more than US $617 million over the past 20 years, including nearly US $103 million for health. These funds will be programmed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), working through its private sector and civil society partners and in coordination with the Brazilian government.

On the announcement, Ambassador Todd Chapman underscored: “This initiative will assist in Brazil’s efforts to mitigate the health and socio-economic impact of COVID-19 and clearly demonstrates our longstanding commitment to our strategic partnership with Brazil.”

Through the American people’s generosity and the U.S. government’s action, the United States continues to demonstrate global leadership in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Months into fighting this pandemic at home and abroad, the United States remains the largest single country donor to the response efforts globally, building on decades of leadership in life-saving health and humanitarian assistance.

The United States will continue its ongoing discussion and commitment to work together with Brazil to improve the lives of our own citizens and to seek ways to assist others in the region and beyond to combat COVID-19.
